Teachers and professors enter grades into an official book carried by each student, which is usually called by its Russian name of Zachotka. Students then display these books to potential employers and universities.[2]
It is not uncommon in Kyrgyzstan (and elsewhere in former Soviet Union) for teachers to accept money or gifts to inflate students' grades. This is because teachers are paid very little and therefore are susceptible to bribes.[3]
